howdy everyone

Post  ByronJC on Mon Aug 25, 2008 1:18 am

Hi guys!

I've put an application in for photographer but not sure if I've been accepted or not anyway they seemed to have approved my forum access pretty quick so I thought I would drop by and say hello to everyone, here's a little more detail as to the equipment I use;

Canon EOS 350DSLR

Canon EF 50mm f1.8
Canon EF 18-55mm f3.5-5.6
Canon EF 75-300mm f4.0-5.6
Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L USM
Canon 430EX Speedlite Flash Unit
Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di LD Macro

I also have a backdrop studio kit which I can take anywhere;

2 x Daylight Fluorescent 5400k bulbs, 70w (280w equivalent each)
4 x Non-Woven Color Backdrop 150cm (W) x 300cm (H) - (Black / White / Pink / Blue)

Well that's it for now ... see you!

You will find that there's not a huge difference between the 350D and 450D you are best to just get the 350D depending on the photo's that you want to take, when you get more experience then you should upgrade to a 40D and above. The 350D are going pretty cheap on ebay as well I picked mine up for a couple hundred then it gives you more money to play with the lenses.

Next year I plan to upgrade and get a 40D or 5D so my 350D will be a backup camera.

I have to agree with most things said here. I have used a 350D and owned a 400D not a lot of difference. 400D was infinitely better in low light at high ISO with virtually no noise at ISO1600 and had two more focus points (which to me doesnt mean a lot). Basically the main differences are a higher resoluton and a bit better sensor which also has a self cleaning mechanism. The 450 is similar to the 400 in many ways too. To be honest I found on the whole my old 10D to be a better performer but it is a higher level camera and even though it was older it can sort of be expected. I now own 2 40D's and cannot recommend them highly enough, mind you most of my paid work is sports so I need the 6.5 FPS and fasst focussing.

If you are just going to be basically taking "snapshots" there is no need to pay ridiculous amounts of money for a body (you probably don't even need an SLR). Canon also has a 1000D out soon (or already?) which is basically a cheap hybrid of the 400D and 450D but will retail for under $1000. Also a replacement for the 5D is much anticpated as it is becoming a little dated now and consumers are hungry for a newer full frame sensored camera.

Another thing to consider is lenses. In my opinion a top quality lens on an entry level body (ie 350,400,450D) will produce much better results than a kit lens on the dearest body in the world. After years of experimenting I'd never use anything but Canon "L" series lenses where possible. I invested in these before I updated bodies and it was well worth it. These are often more expenive than a body but will well and truly outlast a body.

Also if you are in Sydney and buying cameras there is a much cheaper place than any other major store that I have always purchased from. An example would be I got my 40D bodies for $1189 when they were "on sale" elsewhere for $1597! They are now $1155.They're essentially an online business but you can pick your gear up from them in Nth Sydney and they often have a lot of the stuff in stock. Their website is - http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/

I have purchased 2 bodies, 2 grips, a 70-200 2.8L, a 24-70 f/2.8 and a 300f/4L from them and all have been flawless.

Anyway there's my rant on cameras! Hope it helps someone.

While the "L" series is a much superior option they can also be quite expensive depending on what you are going for, also take into consideration that the type of lens you are going to buy read lots of reviews I've found that some lenses which are more affordable such as Tamron/Sigma can almost beat or match some of the "L" series lenses and will save you lots of $$$.

http://www.photographyreview.com is a pretty good site to help compare.

Agreed, there are much cheaper alternatives available, I have owned a qulity Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and was pretty happy with the results. Definitely a major step up from any kit lens. It wasn't until I used an "L" lens that I'd decided I'd never go back and that is probably just a personal thing from the results I got in the field I work in. my first was a 70-200 f/4L.

But yes they are definitely more expensive, like I said, most are more than a body and sometimes considerably more. I'd only really recommend as an investmet them If you are making or wanting to make money out of your work.

But yes there are definitely much cheaper alternatives which will give you better results then a kit lens. And price wise a good example would be a Canon 24-70 f/2.8 goes for around $1500 where a Sigma will go for $500 so there can be huge savings.
